American sculptor, Alexander Calder is known for his extraordinary 'mobiles', described as 'drawings in space'.  He came from a family rich in art and creativity and although he wanted to become a mechanical engineer he turned to art. He is widely recognised as the artist who turned his static abstract sculptures into motion, propelled only by air currents. In 1943 he became the youngest ever artist to have a retrospective of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His legacy was honoured once again with the recent opening of Calder Gardens in his home city of Philadelphia.
