Felim Egan was one of Irelands finest contemporary artists, widely known for his measured and calm abstract paintings. ‘Flow, 1997’, a watercolour on paper was executed at a high point in his career. He was about to win the Gold Award at the Unesco Prize for the Arts and shortly thereafter his acclaimed solo exhibition open at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His ability to set geometric shapes gently against blocks of colour in a refined and delicate way defined the landscapes and seascapes that he adored. His neighbour, the late Seamus Heaney, described Egans style as ‘a balance of shifting brilliances’. It is no surprise then that his best works are highly sought after and feature in many private and public collections.
