One of the leading figures of 20th century art, Matisse was best known as a master of drawing and colour, displayed in a body of work spanning over 50 years. He had a long association with the south of France, where he lived for many years, and like many of his contemporaries was inspired by the extraordinary landscape and light there. He spent his later years in Vence, being nursed by nuns of the Dominican order. His final gift of art, to them and the world, was the Chapelle du Rosaire, filled with murals, stained glass, vestments and sculptural objects.
