One of the most celebrated and important of his generation, Joan Miro was born in Barcelona in 1893. He had his first exhibition there at the age of 25 and on moving to Paris shortly afterwards, his work and style developed into abstract surrealism, which ultimately made him a global star of the art world. 'Le Chien aboyant à la lune' (The Dog barking at the Moon) is a recurring subject for the artist, as some of his earlier works already deal with this theme. While the silhouettes of the animals - dog, rooster, cat and bird - are clearly recognizable, the bright colors of Miro's palette plunge the viewer into a dreamlike universe.
