Richard Smith (English, 1931-2016) was one of the most original painters and printmakers of his generation, and one of the most underrated. He was a truly transatlantic figure who enjoyed huge commercial and critical success in the US and Britain during the 1960s and 70s. He represented Britain twice at the Venice Biennale (a group show in 1966 and a solo show in 1970) and his works are included in major private and museum collections around the world including the Tate Modern, London and the Museum of Modern Art ,New York.
